Aichi Participated in 2019 Biodiversity Forum in Ulsan

As a series of annual forum for local biodiversity action in Korea, Ulsan Metropolitan City as a 5th host of this forum, took a lead to gather citizens, NGOs, leading cities and experts to share experience and diagnose current policy status.

On May 21 2019, Ulsan Metropolitan City, Ulsan Biodiversity Center and ICLEI Korea Office co- held ‘2019 Biodiversity Forum in Ulsan’, a 5th forum for local biodiversity action. About 140 stakeholders including decision makers, public officers, citizens, NGOs and research institutes attended.

In the morning, Siplidae(bamboo) Forest alongside Taehwa river tour was offered to registered participants. 

Opening session was started with a sand art followed by Talk Concert about ‘how biodiversity can be mainstreamed in our city’. 

For the opening, Mr. Yoon Yeong-chan, Director of Environmental Green space Division of Ulsan, Mr. Yoo Seung-gwang , Director of Natural Environment Policy Office of Ministry of Environment, Mr. Park Heung-seok, Director of Ulsan Biodiversity Center were participated and share their policy plan in order to mainstream biodiversity in city strategy at local level. 

In session 1, speakers from leading Korean cities; Ulsan Metropolitan City, Seoul Metropolitan Government, Gangwon Provincial Government which already voluntarily established Local Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plan (NBSAP) gather together to talk about implementation status and share their experience. 

In the last session, entitled as ‘Overseas Biodiversity local action’, two leading cases were introduced; Hiroko Mizuno, Assistant director of Natural Environment Division, Aichi Prefectural Government presented Aichi’s actions toward 2020 and beyond including their initial action called ‘Aichi Mitigation’. Daniela Rizzi, ICLEI Europe Secretariat introduced European local actions for biodiversity within global policy processes with examples of Glasgow, Genk, La Coruña. 

This annual regional biodiversity forum was initiated in 2015 in the aftermath of the “Biodiversity Summit for Cities and Subnational Governments 2014” that was held as a parallel event to the CBD COP held in Pyeongchang, Gangwon Province.  

This forum has been established as a opportunity to allow local governments in South Korea to pursue continuous discussion regarding biodiversity through the nation’s proactive and voluntary leadership on biodiversity policies. This year’s was held following the previous forums in Gangwon Province (2015), Gyeonggi Province (2016), Incheon (2017), and North Chungcheong Province (2018).
