We’re excited to launch Daring Cities 2025, the sixth edition of this annual event co-convened by ICLEI and the Federal City of Bonn, Germany. As we move toward COP30 in Belém, Brazil, Daring Cities 2025 will serve as a pivotal platform for local and regional governments to influence global climate negotiations.
Under the theme “Powering collective action to respond to the climate emergency,” Daring Cities 2024, co-convened by ICLEI and the Federal City of Bonn, Germany, celebrated its fifth edition as a pivotal platform for local and regional leaders championing multilevel and collective climate action.
ICLEI leaders welcomed the first climate finance agreement in 15 years, tripling the current investment. However, they emphasize that it still falls shorts of what's needed for global climate action and adaptation
The 8th Summit for Subnational Governments and Cities, an official parallel event to CBD COP16, will take place on 26 October 2024 in the Blue Zone at the CBD COP in Cali, Colombia, and is part of a 3-day program from 25 to 27 October.
The Multilevel Action & Urbanization Pavilion serves as the global stage for the city and region climate agenda during COP29. The Pavilion will bring into focus not only the challenges and needs, but also the accomplishments and commitments of local and subnational actors on climate action.

ICLEI Japan was founded in 1993, as one of the country offices of ICLEI – Local Governments for Sustainability, and serves to build and enhance the local governments’ network in Japan. ICLEI Japan supports the member cities to lead local initiatives, to promote global collaboration to achieve regional and global sustainability in partnership with other ICLEI offices and partner organizations. The City of Kobe joined ICLEI in 2022. An exotic and cosmopolitan city that led to Japan’s modernization as a gateway to the world, Kobe City is a diverse city that compactly combines highly convenient urban functions with a rich natural environment, including Mount Rokko and the countryside.
In 2020, Kobe City announced the ‘2050 Carbon Neutrality Declaration’ and is promoting initiatives such as the diffusion of renewable energy and the promotion of hydrogen energy to achieve carbon neutrality in 2050. The main initiative is the ‘Hydrogen Smart City Kobe Concept’, and two world-first demonstration projects are being promoted through industry-academia-government collaboration: the ‘Hydrogen Supply Chain Construction Demonstration Project’, which hydrogen is transported from overseas by ship, and the ‘Hydrogen Energy Use System Development Demonstration Project’, which electricity and heat produced from hydrogen are supplied to the city.
MOREAssociate Partnership is available to non-governmental organizations, universities, state and national government agencies and not-for-profit research institutions. The purpose of Associate Partnership is to facilitate dialogues between local governments and these partners, to provide knowledge transfer in line with ICLEI’s Mission and Charter, and an avenue for which partners can support ICLEI’s work and mandate.
