ICLEI Japan was founded in 1993, as one of the country offices of ICLEI – Local Governments for Sustainability, and serves to build and enhance the local governments’ network in Japan. ICLEI Japan supports the member cities to lead local initiatives, to promote global collaboration to achieve regional and global sustainability in partnership with other ICLEI offices and partner organizations. In March 2022, Tottori Prefecture revised its basic environmental plan, the ‘Tottori Prefecture Environmental Initiative Plan for the New Reiwa Era’, and set an ambitious target of reducing CO2 emissions by 60 in 2030 (compared to 2013).
The Prefecture has also proposed the ‘Tottori Ecology Life Campaign‘ as its vision for the year 2030. The idea is not to save energy by forcing people to endure, but to “shift to a lifestyle that protects the environment and health while living comfortably and wisely” and “to activate the local economy through local production for local Consumption of renewable energy” and “Technological Development”, and Tottori has set a friendly nickname Tottori Born! to promote awareness of the campaign.
Tottori actively participated in side events at COP28 Dubai, introducing its initiatives towards a decarbonised society and interacting with advanced municipalities from around the world. Three students dispatched from the Prefecture participated in the field and expressed their determination to actively communicate as young people.
Associate Partnership is available to non-governmental organizations, universities, state and national government agencies and not-for-profit research institutions. The purpose of Associate Partnership is to facilitate dialogues between local governments and these partners, to provide knowledge transfer in line with ICLEI’s Mission and Charter, and an avenue for which partners can support ICLEI’s work and mandate.
