‘Mieux vivre en ville’ The report about better living for people in France and Japan

France is one of the most active countries in reducing its carbon footprint. It has set a goal of achieving carbon neutrality by reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 40% by 2050.

And for France, including all developed countries, to achieve their carbon neutrality goals, cities need to fundamentally rethink the way they do business. They must also consider how to incorporate natural elements (water, air, greenery) into buildings, transportation, tourism, consumption, and finance to not only decarbonize but also to create more livable communities.

The “Mieux Vivre en Ville” committee (Smart Cities in France and Japan with an Emphasis on “Live-ability”) held three online panel discussions to showcase case studies of a number of municipalities working to reduce CO2 emissions, as well as reports from experts-based in these two countries. (already mentioned in the text above)

ICLEI members also participated, learning from each other about French and Japanese initiatives in accordance with their respective themes.

Session 1: “BuildingToward a Smart Low-Carbon City”: Sapporo City

Session 2: “Creating a city where people can breathe easy”: Kitakyushu City and Yokohama City

Session 3: “The Future of Low-Carbon Cities: A New Perspective”: Kyoto Prefecture
