UN published Plastics Treaty Zero Draft
On 4 September, the Zero Draft of the Plastic Treaty has been published. The Zero Draft text is designed to guide and support the Intergovernmental Negotiating Committee (INC) at its third meeting in Nairobi, Kenya in November.
ICLEI highlights two main points in the Plastic Treaty process from a local and national perspective. First, cities and local governments play an central role in the plastics issue, with roles ranging from waste management to switching to alternative plastics. Secondly, drawing on the experience of other international negotiations, and the need to be ambitious and rapid implementation on plastics issue, ICLEI supports the UN process and emphasises the importance of local government in the INC process.
The outcome of the Plastic Treaty will have a significant impact on local governments, which are responsible for most of the waste management work, and this is why ICLEI is actively involved in the side events held by the Japanese Ministry of the Environment at the INC2, where we have submitted our proposals as a local governments.
