Sapporo City promotes Heat Source Conversion at the 2024 Sapporo Snow Festival
Sapporo has set a target to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in the city by 55% by 2030 compared to 2016 levels in order to achieve a Zero Carbon City by 2050.
Due to the high energy consumption for heating in winter, which is characteristic of snowy and cold regions, Sapporo is promoting the ‘Heat Source Conversion’ initiative to encourage a switch from paraffin-based heating and hot water equipment with high CO2 emissions to energy-saving equipment using electricity and gas with low CO2 emissions.
The Sapporo City Environment Bureau, in cooperation with Daikin HVAC Solutions Hokkaido Co., Ltd. installed cold-weather air conditioners at the Odori 6-chome venue of the 2024 Sapporo Snow Festival held from 4 to 11 February, and set up booths where visitors will be able to experience the warmth of the cold-weather air conditioners.
In addition, the ‘Decabo Score‘, which visualizes CO2 emissions equivalents, has been introduced for the first time in Hokkaido to encourage citizens to change their behaviour by understanding the specific CO2 emissions resulting from environmentally friendly actions.
