Kyoto and Yokohama in 2030: Envisioning 1.5 Degree Lifestyles
‘Envisioning 1.5 Degree Lifestyles’ is a report that shares the results of the ‘Envisioning Future Low Carbon Lifestyles and Transition Measures’ demonstration project (2019-2021), produced for each city.
This project is led by the Institute for Global Environmental Strategies (IGES) under the United Nations’ One Planet network, in collaboration with ICLEI Japan and ICLEI Africa, as well as the Science Communication Research Institute (SCRI), National Institute for Environmental Studies (NIES) and other organizations cooperating in the project. The project quantified a list of decarbonized actions that citizens in 6 cities in 5 countries, including Japan, could implement and their respective carbon footprint reduction potentials.
In the case of Japan, 65 decarbonized behaviors were presented with their carbon footprint reduction potential across sectors such as housing, mobility, food, goods, services, and leisure. Public participation workshops were subsequently held in all 6 of the above-mentioned cities to discuss the potential for the spread of new behaviors and the initiatives needed to spread them.
Workshop participants were also given the opportunity to try out carbon footprint reduction actions at home to see the benefits and difficulties of their new lifestyle.
From the learnings from citizens’ discussions and experiences, the project proposed a ‘1.5°C lifestyle’ for 2030 that would suit each city, as well as effective government, business, and civic initiatives that would help to realize the new lifestyle.
