A Special ICLEI Café on 24th December
The fourth café in 2021 focused on the theme of designing climate citizens’ assemblies and introduced the case of the “Climate Assembly Sapporo 2020”, which was carried out as a practical study to explore the possibility of applying the concept in Japan.
Hokkaido University presented the results of their works, including the case study in Europe, as a powerful approach to formulating and presenting the opinions of citizens through deliberations on the transition to a decarbonized society, also shared the need for innovation in decision-making in the form of climate democracy.
Sapporo City then gave a presentation on the significance and the use of the climate citizen’s assembly, sharing that it is important to provide balanced information and dialogue that leads to citizens’ action, and that it has provided a benchmark for the implementation of measures. Kawasaki City also introduced their response to the “Proposal from the Kawasaki Citizens’ Assembly for Decarbonization Kawasaki – Towards a Decarbonization Kawasaki in 2050”.
