ICLEI Japan at COP29
On 12 November, ICLEI Japan and the Institute for Global Environmental Strategies (IGES) organized a seminar, ‘Efforts to Realize a Sound Material-Cycle Society through Multilevel Climate Action‘ at the Japan Pavilion in the COP29 Blue Zone in Baku, Azerbaijan.
After opening remarks by Kazuhiko Takemoto, Chair of ICLEI Japan, and Hiroshi Ono, Executive Director of IGES, a keynote speech was given by Yutaka Matsuzawa, Vice Minister for Global Environment Affairs, MOEJ, who emphasized the importance of working with various stakeholders, especially local governments, in developing the next NDC in line with the 1.5°C target and for future decarbonization.
The following High-level Session was attended by leaders representing local governments worldwide. From Japan, Yuriko Koike, Governor of Tokyo, and Hayato Shimizu, Mayor of Saitama City, both members of ICLEI Japan; from the USA, Yana Garcia, Secretary for Environmental Protection, CaIEPA; Maimunah Moh Sharif, Mayor of Kuala Lumper, Malaysia; Clécio Luis, Governor of Amapá State, Brazil; and Niina Ratilainen, Member of Turku City Council, Finland – the six speakers presented their initiatives for decarbonization, multi-level cooperation, and efforts to create a recycling-oriented society.
In the Action Session that followed, Saitama City and the Johor Sustainability Center, Malaysia announced the ‘Collaboration in Sustainable Wood Architecture’ with a signing ceremony taking place at the COP29 venue and also introduced climate actions taken so far, such as city-to-city collaboration between the two cities.
