ICLEI Japan’s Initiatives
ICLEI Japan supports its member local governments in their participation in international initiatives and conferences, and promotes the dissemination and exchange of advanced urban practices both domestically and internationally.
With the growing recognition of the vital role of cities in the transition toward a sustainable society, ICLEI Japan advances city-led initiatives through international intercity cooperation.
Main Areas of Activity
1. Showcasing Advanced Initiatives by Japanese Cities to the Global Community
ICLEI Japan helps local governments participate in international initiatives and global conferences, providing opportunities to present their leading initiatives on the world stage.
Working closely with the ICLEI World Secretariat and regional offices, ICLEI Japan supports member cities in engaging with major international forums, including ICLEI events and key UN conferences such as COP and UNEA.
2. Creating Opportunities for Information Exchange and Knowledge Sharing among Member Local Governments
To provide regular platforms for information exchange and dissemination among member local governments and relevant stakeholders, ICLEI Japan implements the following initiatives:
- ICLEI Sustainable Cities Study Group (ICLEI Café)
- ICLEI Japan Seminar
3. Collecting and Sharing Global Insights on Sustainable Cities and Climate Action
ICLEI Japan provides the latest information on advanced initiatives by local governments in Japan and around the world, as well as global trends in sustainable cities, climate action, and the circular economy. These updates are shared through email newsletters and the official website to support knowledge sharing and informed decision-making.

4. Research and Consulting
Through the global ICLEI network, ICLEI Japan delivers commissioned projects including research and analytical support for local governments in Japan and worldwide, as well as the planning and coordination of international conferences related to sustainable cities, climate action, and sustainable urban development.

Associate Partnership is available to non-governmental organizations, universities, state and national government agencies and not-for-profit research institutions. The purpose of Associate Partnership is to facilitate dialogues between local governments and these partners, to provide knowledge transfer in line with ICLEI’s Mission and Charter, and an avenue for which partners can support ICLEI’s work and mandate.
