Environmental Initiatives
Hiroshima City is advancing waste reduction and resource recycling initiatives to achieve its vision of “Zero Emission City Hiroshima,” which seeks to minimize waste generation and create a society with minimal environmental impact. As a result of these efforts, the amount of waste generated per person per day remains among the lowest levels of Japan’s designated cities, demonstrating steady progress in waste reduction and resource recovery. Furthermore, in April 2023, Hiroshima enacted the “Hiroshima City Food Loss Reduction Promotion Ordinance,” strengthening its initiatives to foster a circular economy.
To advance the transition to a decarbonized society, Hiroshima announced its commitment in December 2020 to achieving net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050. The City has since promoted energy efficiency measures and the wider deployment of renewable energy.
In July 2022, Hiroshima issued the Hiroshima Climate Emergency Declaration, and in March 2023, revised its Global Warming Countermeasures Action Plan. By fostering a shared sense of urgency among citizens, businesses, and other stakeholders, and by working closely with neighboring local governments in the Hiroshima Metropolitan Area and ICLEI, the City is striving to pass on the region’s rich natural environment to future generations.
