Yokohama Showcases Climate Leadership at COP30 Local Leaders Forum
Hirotaka Sato, Deputy Mayor of Yokohama City, participated in the COP30 Local Leaders Forum, held from 3–5 November in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, where he engaged in discussions on climate change with mayors and local leaders from cities around the world.
At the Global Covenant of Mayors for Climate & Energy (GCoM) Board Meeting, Deputy Mayor Sato represented Mayor Takeharu Yamanaka of Yokohama City, the GCoM Board Member for East Asia. He highlighted Yokohama’s role in driving climate action across Asia through the Asia Smart City Conference, hosted by the City of Yokohama, and called for strengthened city-to-city collaboration to advance effective climate change mitigation and adaptation.
At the CHAMP (Coalition for High Ambition Multilevel Partnerships) High-Level Policy Dialogue, the City of Yokohama presented its decarbonization initiatives in the Minato Mirai district, a designated Decarbonization Leading Area, as a model for large cities demonstrating how urban actions can contribute to national-level climate change policies. The city also participated in discussions at the C40 Asia-Pacific Mayors Summit, focusing on urban heat mitigation measures, sharing perspectives on how cities in the region can respond to increasing extreme heat.
Throughout the Forum, the City of Yokohama held dialogues with numerous leaders from countries and cities around the world. Using this international platform, the city promoted GREEN×EXPO 2027, to be held in Yokohama in 2027, and called for continued collaboration toward the realization of a sustainable society.
