The City of Kobe has joined ICLEI, a global contributing city nurtured by the sea and mountains
ICLEI Japan is pleased to welcome its newest member, the City of Kobe, located in Hyogo Prefecture, Japan.
As of 1 November 2022, Kobe City joined ICLEI. The city has developed various initiatives for the realization of a sustainable city, including the Japan Designated Cities Mayors Association (JDCMA), chaired by Kobe Mayor Kizo Hisamoto.
On 22 November, Mr. Gino Van Beggin, ICLEI World Secretary General, who was in Japan to attend the Saitama Sustainable Cities Summit – E-KIZUNA Global Summit, handed Mayor Hisamoto a membership certificate and expressed his expectations for Kobe City with a welcome message.
Mayor Hisamoto expressed his intention to contribute to natural disaster prevention and mitigation and reconstruction by sharing Kobe’s experience of the Great Hanshin Earthquake with the world.
ICLEI Japan Chairman Kazuhiko Takemoto and Executive Director Togo Uchida, were also present at the handover ceremony, and the meeting ended in a friendly atmosphere, with discussions on the outcomes of COP27, held in Egypt from 6 to 20 November.
