On 27 February 2024, the Nagoya Higashiyama Forest in Nagoya City was certified by the Ministry of the Environment, Japan (MOEJ) as a Natural Symbiosis Site, recognising its biodiversity value and ongoing efforts to conserve nature.

The Natural Symbiosis Site system recognises areas where biodiversity is conserved through the efforts of local governments, private companies, organisations, and other stakeholders. Sites that overlap with protected areas are excluded from registration in the international database of Other Effective area-based Conservation Measures (OECMs).

Located in the eastern part of Nagoya City, the Nagoya Higashiyama Forest is an important urban green space that supports biodiversity while providing opportunities for people to connect with nature. Its certification highlights the role that urban and peri-urban natural areas can play in biodiversity conservation and the achievement of the 30 by 30 target.

Nagoya City is working to advance Nature Positive action and strengthen biodiversity conservation across the city. The city has set a target of having at least five Natural Symbiosis Sites certified within Nagoya by 2030.

Nagoya City’s Environmental Policy Division operates the Nagoya Nature Positive Partner Program. Through the program, Nagoya City facilitates matching between companies seeking to carry out biodiversity conservation activities and organisations engaged in conservation efforts. Updates on support initiatives and collaborative activities are shared through Nagoya City’s official biodiversity Instagram account.

By working with local communities, businesses, landowners, and other stakeholders, Nagoya City aims to protect and restore urban ecosystems while creating opportunities for people and nature to thrive together.
