Kyoto City Joins 2026 Kaohsiung CityCOP Summit Forum, Showcasing Climate Initiatives
On March 21, 2026, the “2026 CityCop Kaohsiung City Climate Summit Forum” was held in Kaohsiung, Taiwan, co-organized by the Kaohsiung City Government, the Kaohsiung Environmental Protection Bureau, and ICLEI.
The summit aimed to further advance “science-based, people-centered” urban transformation through international dialogue, leveraging the city-to-city collaboration capacity of the Kaohsiung–ICLEI Climate Neutral and Smart Cities Community of Practice (ComP).
At this summit, global experts, city leaders, and innovators came together to explore pathways toward achieving “prosperous lives for all.” Discussions included reflections on the upcoming IPCC Special Report on Cities, scheduled for release in 2027, as well as the sharing of broadly applicable climate solutions that can be implemented in cities worldwide and exchanges of views on the challenges faced by urban areas.
In the session on urban case studies, representatives from the City of Adelaide (Australia), Goyang City (Republic of Korea), the City of Penang (Malaysia), the City of Newcastle (New Zealand), and the City of Kyoto (Japan) took the stage to share examples of diverse climate governance strategies tailored to their respective geographical, industrial, and social contexts.
Ms. Mioko Yabuki, Director of the DO YOU KYOTO? Project Promotion Office at the Climate Change Policy Office of the City of Kyoto delivered a presentation on the city’s efforts toward decarbonization within its historical and cultural context. She highlighted Kyoto’s initiatives to transform its cultural heritage into hubs for climate action through efforts such as circular resource use, environmental education, and sustainable tourism.
