Hiroshima City Launches EV Bus Service Using Locally Generated Renewable Electricity “Hiroshima Jake-Ene Electricity”
Hiroshima City has declared its commitment to achieving net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050. To realize this goal, the city has been promoting climate change mitigation measures in a comprehensive and systematic manner, based on the Hiroshima City Action Plan for Global Warming Countermeasures, which was revised in March 2023.
As part of its broader climate action efforts, Hiroshima City launched the Local Production and Local Consumption Electricity Project Utilizing Surplus Electricity from Municipal Waste Incineration Plants in April 2025. Through this initiative, surplus electricity generated at municipal waste incineration plants, together with renewable electricity produced by private-sector operators within the city, is supplied to and utilized at municipal facilities. The carbon-free electricity provided under this project will be branded as “Hiroshima Jake-Ene Electricity”. The name combines “Jake”, a Hiroshima dialect meaning “because/from Hiroshima”, and “Energy,” expressing locally generated and locally consumed renewable electricity.
By expanding the use of this locally generated electricity across a wider range of facilities, Hiroshima City aims to further reduce greenhouse gas emissions while strengthening local energy production and consumption, contributing to its long-term net-zero greenhouse gas emissions goals.
Operation of EV Buses Supplied with “Hiroshima Jake-Ene Electricity”
EV buses leased to local bus operators through the Bus Cooperation and Co-Creation Platform Hiroshima (Platform Hiroshima)* will operate within Hiroshima City using electricity supplied under “Hiroshima Jake-Ene Electricity.”
Electricity supply is scheduled to begin on 14 February 2026 for Hiroshima Bus, and on 1 April 2026 for Hiroshima Electric Railway. Through this initiative, Hiroshima City aims to achieve net-zero greenhouse gas emissions from EV bus operations, while further promoting the local production and consumption of carbon-free electricity.
*Platform Hiroshima is a public–private partnership organization jointly established by Hiroshima City and eight local bus operators. It serves as the core organization of the “Hiroshima Model,” a collaborative bus operation system designed to rebuild and strengthen local bus services through cooperation and co-creation among public and private stakeholders.
